Our history

NextGen Scholars Initiatives (NextGenSI) was founded by a visionary team of young professionals and educators in Malava, Kakamega County. The idea was born out of a shared concern for the growing number of orphans and vulnerable children who lacked access to mentorship, quality education, and supportive community structures. Driven by a passion for service and a belief in the power of practical learning, the founders set out to create a community-based organization that bridges educational gaps while nurturing confidence, curiosity, and leadership among the youth.

The organization began with the simple but powerful goal of providing hands-on STEM mentorship to underserved learners, many of whom had never accessed a laboratory or received personalized academic guidance. This vision sparked the first flagship STEM Mentorship Program in late 2024, which brought together mentors, volunteers, and partners such as Jochapu Enterprises, Giganet Technologies, and the Redeemed Gospel Church. The program’s success by reaching more than 200 learners within its initial months proved that structured mentorship could transform outcomes for children who had historically been left behind.

As NextGenSI grew, so did its mission and scope. The organization expanded beyond STEM education to include climate change adaptation, digital literacy, peacebuilding, sports development, and social welfare programs. These additions reflected a holistic belief that children and youth need more than academic knowledge. They need life skills, emotional support, community belonging, and opportunities to express their talents. The establishment of a dedicated Welfare Unit further strengthened the organization’s capacity to support vulnerable families and foster community resilience.

Today, NextGen Scholars Initiatives stands as a vibrant, youth-led movement transforming education and empowerment across Kakamega County and beyond. Registered under the Directorate of Social Development and guided by a diverse seven-member leadership team, the organization continues to grow its partnerships, expand its reach, and refine programs that inspire learning, leadership, and sustainability. From classrooms and churches to community fields and environmental sites, NextGenSI remains committed to shaping a generation that is innovative, responsible, and ready to lead Kenya into a brighter future.
